A Photo Adventure in Maine

Ever since I (mostly) retired from my photography business last year, I’ve dreamed of spending more time exploring the coast of Maine, which I’ve loved all my life…especially off-the-beaten-track locations that can only be reached by boat. Recently, partly through meeting the perfect boat captain, the idea is finally within reach. My idea could provide a great opportunity for other photographers, as well…please read on. And please note–the trip will be open to any and all, not just pro photographers. You can shoot with your phone if that’s what you want to do!

Here’s what I have in mind:

I’ve tentatively booked Tues., September 23rd or Wed., the  24th, with a backup of September 30th or Oct. 1st, in case of bad weather in the first week. Let me know if the Tuesday or Wednesday date is preferable…the majority will win on this.

The boat will leave from Rockport Marine Park, 111 Pascal Ave., in Rockport.

We’ll plan for an early start, leaving the pier at 6:00 AM.

For anyone interested, the captain told me:

  • That he will talk to some of the local lobster people, and we’ll be able to shoot some photos of them as they prepare for their day on the water.
Note—it will still be dark, but this could provide some interesting photo ops.
  • We’ll head for the island of Vinalhaven, about 15 miles from Rockport harbor. It will take about an hour to get out to the island, so we’ll have plenty of time for open water photos.
  • The boat can navigate in shallow waters, so a good part of our trip will be cruising slowly among small neighboring islands, pausing as needed for photos.

I’ve talked and emailed back and forth with the boat captain, and I think he’s an ideal choice for the kind of trip I have in mind. Very experienced, with a comfortable and safe boat. And as mentioned previously, he’s a very experienced photographer in his own right—I’m confident that he’s the right person to get us to a lot of awesome spots.

More about the trip and the cost…

  • For information about our Captain and the boat, visit his website. You’ll find plenty of information about Captain Jonathan Laurence and his boat, Moon Dog.
  • The cost for a six hour trip (departing at 6:00 am and returning at 12:00 noon) is $2,100 total, including gratuity. We’ll split this cost equally among the number in our group (maximum of six).
  • Fyi, I will not be making any money from the other photographers—I’m doing this because I want the opportunity to do a trip I couldn’t otherwise afford. I’ll be paying the same amount as everyone else on board.
  • So… If we have four photographers on the trip (including me), each will pay $525. If we max out at six people on board, each pays just $350.
  • Please note that the fees mentioned above are for the excursion only. There is a head (bathroom) and a hand-washing sink on board, but everyone will be responsible for their own food and beverages, as well as travel to Rockport and accommodations as needed.

Since we’re starting to get close to the trip…

  • A deposit of $300 each is required, and is due two weeks prior to the trip (by September 2nd). Your deposit is fully refundable up to two weeks before there trip, and 50% refundable between two weeks and one week before the trip. After this date, no refunds will be paid. Non-refunded deposits will be credited evenly among the people who go on the trip.
  • If the trip is cancelled for any reason, everyone will get their money back.
  • Payment in full must be made by one week before the trip date.
  • Payment can be made by check, PayPal, or Venmo, and will be paid to me. There will be a 2.99% fee added to your cost if you use PayPal or Venmo, to cover their fees to me.
  • Please note—this is NOT a business venture on my part. I won’t be making any money on this, so that’s why I have to require that the payment works as described above.
  • Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about the payment process.
  • For transparency’s sake, here’s my info: Tom Wall, 42 Patroon Pl., Loudonville, NY, 12211, tomwall86@gmail.com, cell 518-461-1024.

This trip will be an amazing opportunity to see the Maine coastline from a perspective normally not available to those who visit this amazing state.

About me…

  • I grew up in Chatham, NY—south of Albany. My parents were teachers there, and this is where my love of photography first bloomed…way back in the 1970s. I graduated from SUNY Albany (as it was known) in 1979, and kicked around for a year or so before I started my career at WNYT NewsChannel 13, where I worked as a Commercial Photographer for over 25 years.
  • Along with a lot of other independent work, my work at WNYT led to a regular gig with ESPN, where I shot running races all over the country and around the world for over 10 years.
  • I also shot weddings during this time, concentrating on this side of my career much more starting in the mid-90s. I was fortunate to be married to a marketing expert, and together, Noelle and I built a successful business that supported us well. I finally shot my last wedding just last year, doing right around 800 in all.
  • I live in Loudonville with my aforementioned wife Noelle. We’re lucky to have an amazing family, and love to spend time with all of them, including our 12 grandchildren.

If you’re concerned…

  • Since photographers from out of the area and who don’t know me and my reputation may be seeing this, I can provide a list of people who can vouch for my honesty and integrity. Feel free to contact them regarding my honesty and integrity.
  • Also, note that both PayPal and Venmo offer a buyer protection service.
